How to Find a North Dakota Medicare Agent: Six Questions to Ask

Even if you have experience choosing health insurance, you may not be prepared for the intricacies of Medicare. In addition to choosing what type of Medicare you want, you’ll need to pick the right plan to gain all the coverage and benefits you want at an affordable price. The solution is to work with a Medicare agent.

Before deciding to work with any particular agent, make sure the person has the necessary experience to guide you to the right plan.

1. Do you have any testimonials?

Asking to see testimonials will show you if the agent has many satisfied clients already. This gives you a better idea of the agent’s experience and shows you what other people think of the service — which has much more weight than what the agent says about his or herself.

2. How do you support your clients?

Find out what the agent does for his or her clients in addition to helping them enroll in plans. This may include:

  • Helping them find out if they qualify for financial assistance
  • Checking their plans every year to make sure they’re still appropriate — clients’ needs or some of the terms in the plan may have changed
  • Supporting clients with medical underwriting, which may be necessary for a Medicare Supplement plan

3. How many carriers do you work with?

The average Medicare beneficiary can choose between eight carriers, although many have access to 10 or more. Agents don’t typically work with all the carriers in an area because this would require too large a time commitment for training. However, the right agent for you will represent at least a few of the big players and perhaps some local carriers. Avoid agents who represent only one carrier, as their offerings will likely be too limited.

4. What kinds of plans do you sell?

There are multiple types of Medicare plans. An agent may decide to sell all of them or to just focus on a particular type. Neither is inherently better than the other. If you are still exploring all your options, you should pick an agent with a broad range. However, if you’re certain you want a particular type of Medicare — Original Medicare over Medicare Advantage, for example — you may like to pick an agent who specializes in that type of Medicare to gain expert guidance.

5. How do you help clients find the best plan for their needs?

The last thing you want is an agent who pushes the same plans to everyone — what may be great for one person may be lacking for someone else. It’s critical to find an agent who will take the time to listen to your needs and work with you to find an appropriate plan. Ask agents about their assessment process to make sure this will be the case.

6. What geographical areas do your plans cover?

It’s no good finding an agent who serves North Dakota in general — you need someone who focuses on plans in your specific area. Ask agents if they’re licensed in the state and which regions they cover.

Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all your options.
