How to Find an Oregon Medicare Agent: Six Questions to Ask
There’s so much to take into account when picking the right Medicare plan for you — from the type of plan to what kind of benefits you want. Checking every single plan on offer in your area is just not possible. This is where a Medicare insurance agent can help.
Find the right Medicare agent for you by asking the following questions.
1. How do you choose which carriers to represent?
There may be as many as eight or even more than 10 carriers in your area. Since it’s impossible for an agent to work with all of them (each has specific training and licensing requirements), find out how the agent chooses which ones to represent. The best agents choose a selection to give clients access to plans that will meet a wide variety of needs. For instance, some clients may need prescription drugs at a low cost, whereas others may care most about additional benefits like gym memberships and travel benefits.
2. What types of plans do you have available?
Some agents only sell a certain type of Medicare plan, such as Medicare Advantage. If you know what kind of Medicare plan you want, it may be helpful to choose an agent who has this specialization, as you’ll benefit from the agent’s expertise. However, if you’re unsure about what you’ll need, it is better to choose an agent who sells all types of Medicare plans: Original Medicare, dual-eligible Medicare plans, Part D, dental, and vision.
3. How do you take care of your clients?
When you choose a Medicare agent, you’re looking for more than someone to sell you a plan — you’re looking for a trusted advisor to support you with your healthcare insurance needs throughout the year. The right agent will be available to educate you and provide you with additional services, including:
- Responding to any doubts you have about your coverage
- Assistance with billing issues
- Reassessing your plan every year to determine if you should switch to a different one
- Helping with any medical underwriting you need, such as for a Medicare Supplement plan
4. What experience do you have selling Medicare plans?
It’s helpful to find an agent who is experienced not just at selling insurance but specifically selling Medicare plans. Choose an agent who clearly understands Medicare insurance on a deep level and can answer any specific questions you have about benefits and coverage.
5. Where do you operate?
To ensure the agent will be able to provide you with plenty of plans to choose from, you need to find someone who operates in your area. The agent must be licensed in Oregon and have plans for your specific county.
6. Are you familiar with state and federal financial assistance programs?
If you’re worried about being able to afford Medicare insurance, it’s worth looking into financial assistance programs. These are available at the state and federal level. To avoid needing to research these yourself, find an agent who is familiar with programs that you may be eligible for.
When you meet with an agent you should never feel pressured or obligated to buy anything. You should feel comfortable with their personality and communication style since this is someone you hope to build a long term relationship with.
Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs.
