When you’re retired, you have the freedom to dedicate as much time as you like to travel. If you’ve already visited many of the most obvious destinations or are just looking for something unlike anywhere you’ve been before, consider Abu Dhabi.
Reasons to Visit
There are several compelling reasons why you should make Abu Dhabi your next vacation destination.
1. Rich in Culture
Abu Dhabi may conjure up images of ultra-modern buildings and towering skyscrapers. Whereas these are definitely defining characteristic of the city, there’s still plenty of ancient culture here, too. For instance, Emirates Heritage Village is a reconstruction of a desert village where you can see demonstrations of traditional crafts. The city is a place where ancient Arabic culture and sleek modernity exist side by side.
2. The Perfect Place to Relax
Whereas younger travelers may choose Abu Dhabi for adventures, it’s equally suitable as a destination for relaxation. Try the traditional hammam experience and other treatments at the luxury spas, sunbathe on the pristine beaches, or take advantage of wellness facilities at hotels. Many hotels even offer programs tailored for seniors, which focus on stretching, gentle exercise, and stress relief.
3. Delicious Food
In addition to local Emirate cuisine, you’ll find restaurants serving food from all over the world. Depending on your preferences and budget, you can choose to eat at street food stalls, Michelin-star restaurants, or anything in between. Many restaurants have outdoor seating with views of the city.
4. Good Accessibility
Abu Dhabi is becoming a popular international destination, which means there are now direct flights from many major airports. Once you’re in the country, it’s easy to get around thanks to the public transport system and numerous taxis. If you have limited mobility, you’ll still be able to visit many museums and other top tourist sites, as most are wheelchair accessible. Plus, you should be able to find a hotel with features like an accessible shower, grab bars, and low counters.
Things to See and Do
Abu Dhabi has plenty to offer, whatever your interests.
Parks and Nature
There are numerous ways to spend time outdoors in Abu Dhabi. In fact, you may be surprised by just how much nature there is around.
One place you should definitely consider visiting is Mangrove National Park. This contains three-quarters of all the mangroves in the country. The salt marshes and mudflats are sites of great biodiversity.
A little further afield, at 90 minutes from the city, is Al Ain Oasis. You may be surprised how green the area is, especially being so close to the desert. In addition to soaking in the nature, a visit will give you the chance to learn about the ancient irrigation system called falaj. It’s an important aspect of the region and the reason this oasis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Impressive Architecture
There are all sorts of ways to marvel at the architecture in Abu Dhabi. Don’t miss Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is an excellent example of Islamic architecture. Another must-see is Al Jahili Fort — its gardens and exhibition rooms are all free to enter.
Beaches
If you’re finding Abu Dhabi a bit too hot, go to the beach and take a dip. There are many beaches to choose from, but Corniche Beach and Saadiyat Island have to be the top choices. Both are beautiful, with white sands and turquoise waters.
Museums
Also ideal whatever the weather are museums. You’re spoilt for choice — from art museums like Louvre Abu Dhabi and Etihad Modern Art Gallery to cars at Emirates National Auto Museum and ancient history at Delma Museum.
Shopping
A top location for shopping in Abu Dhabi is Yas Mall, located on Yas Island. It’s worth visiting just for the experience of wandering around the building (which houses more than 370 stores and 60 eateries), even if you don’t intend to buy anything. Another option is The Galleria, which is based on Al Maryah Island.
For more traditional shopping, head to Mina Market. If you want to bring back some souvenirs, look for traditional Arabic products like coffee, incense, dates, and things made from camel milk, including soap and chocolate.

- Download a translation app to be able to communicate with the locals.
- There’s no need for US citizens to apply for a visa before they arrive in the UAE — you’ll receive a 30-day visa upon arrival, free of charge.
