Why Start A Book Club?
As someone who has been part of a book club for almost 20 years, I can tell you without reservation that it is a source of joy in my life. Our book club has 14 members, and together, we have enjoyed some of the best book club books out there. Most of us met when we were in our 30s and our kids were in grade school or playing sports together. Now, we are in our 50s. Our kids have left the nest. A lot has changed in all of our lives, and throughout all of it, our book club has been meeting once a month. While I don’t hang out with most of my fellow members outside of book club, I genuinely look forward to catching up with them each month and I value their input and experiences. Book club is a source of inspiration, a reason to take time out and read and a great way to stay in touch with like-minded people.
How to Start A Book Club
To start a book club, you should find at least two other people who share your passion for reading. Look at your existing social circles first. If you’re a parent, invite other parents that you know from your child’s school or extracurricular activities. If you work out, or go to church, or are involved in other extracurriculars, look for potential book clubbers in those places. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to spot readers and start booky conversations. If you see someone reading, ask them about their book. Then, when the time is right, ask them if they belong to a book club or have any interest in joining one.
If you don’t have any existing social circles to draw from, join a Facebook group for your local community and post an invitation to join you for book club.
Where to Host Book Club
In my book club, members host book club at their own homes on a rotation. Since we have 14 members, I am the host roughly every 14 months. We find it comfortable to host in our homes because we all live in the same community and know each other well.
If you do not know the members of your book club very well, it may be more comfortable to host your book club at a public venue such as a local coffee shop, library or bookstore. Many bookstores have meeting rooms where book clubs can meet.
How to Choose Books for Your Book Club
We have a planning meeting at the beginning of each book club cycle. At that meeting, we sign up for the dates we want to host. At that same planning meeting, each member suggests two books for their month. Then the group votes on which book we will read each month. We bring two suggestions because there is an inevitable overlap. If one person has already chosen one of your two suggestions, it’s easy to segue to the next option.
How to Keep Your Book Club Organized
It’s important to get dates and books on the calendar early so everyone can save the dates. We use a group Google Calendar. Each entry includes the host name, host address, and book choice. The day of the week that we meet changes each time and is according to each host’s preference. At our planning meeting, one of our tech-savvy members takes charge of setting up the calendar. She actually enters everything while we are meeting, so by the end of the night, everyone in the group is up to date.
It’s also important that the book club sets up a texting group for easy communication throughout the year.
Tips for Hosting Book Club
One week before you host, be sure to send out a text reminder to the group and to ask for RSVPs.
In our book club, the host provides a light, casual meal and beverages. Some hosts cook and others pick up catering. There is usually a choice of wine or non-alcoholic beverages. Sometimes, the host aligns the menu with the theme of the book. Our rule is that when you host, you provide everything and the guests just show up. This makes it easy for people to participate.
Book club typically begins at 7 or 7:30 and ends around 10:00 p.m. We eat and mingle for about an hour before we start the book discussion. When it’s time, the host calls everyone together to begin the discussion. The host often begins by asking who read the book, and who liked the book. Members share their general comments and then we shift into more detail. It’s a good idea to have a list of discussion questions on hand. If you look online, it’s easy to find book club discussion questions for most books. Sometimes questions about the book segue to questions about life, and in our club, that’s just fine. We enjoy the parallels.
Other Ideas
Once your book club is up and running smoothly, you may find other ways to meet. For example, if a book that we read is made into a movie, we plan a movie night to see it or if an author we like is speaking downtown, we arrange an outing. Once a year, it can be fun to invite spouses or kids to a family book club.
Best Book Club Books
There are countless books and the best part is most books are evergreen. Even books released in 1947 are still relevant and entertaining to read today. Below is a list of some of our book club’s picks over the years. Some of these might become favorites for your book club too!
