How to Find a Pennsylvania Medicare Agent: Six Questions to Ask

The sheer number of Medicare plans you have to choose from may be overwhelming. Since each plan is designed for beneficiaries with distinct needs, it’s crucial to pick the right one for you. Key to this is receiving support from a Medicare insurance agent.

This still comes with a decision, but it’s an easier one: which Medicare agent to work with. Ask these questions to find someone who has your best interests in mind.

1. What experience do you have selling Medicare?

It’s always helpful to work with an experienced insurance agent. Of course, Medicare is just one type of insurance — agents may market themselves as being experienced but still be new to Medicare. It’s best to find someone who has specifically been selling Medicare for at least the past couple years to ensure the agent is familiar with the intricacies of Medicare regulations.

2. Which plans do you sell?

In order to have the widest possible selection, choose an agent who represents both local and national insurance carriers who offer plans in your area. You are more likely to find a plan that suits your needs.

3. What carriers will I be able to choose from?

Even agents who sell a variety of plan types won’t sell from every single carrier in your area — this is impossible due to the training that agents need to receive from each insurer to sell the plans. However, you do want to find an agent who sells plans from several carriers to give yourself enough options. If there’s an insurer you’re particularly interested in, make sure you find an agent who sells its plans.

4. Where do you operate in Pennsylvania?

Make sure your agent offers plans that cover the area where you live. This will ensure you can choose between several plans that cover doctors, clinics, and other healthcare services near you.

5. Do you provide financial assistance services?

If you believe you may be eligible for financial assistance, make sure you find an agent who knows about the possible programs. These are available on both a state and federal level. It’s important to receive aid if you qualify for it to save money whenever you have out-of-pocket medical costs, such as on prescription medications.

6. What other support do you offer?

Top Medicare agents do far more than just help you find a plan each year. The best agent for you will provide you with additional services related to your healthcare all year round. You should expect a Medicare agent to provide support such as:

  • Providing you with advice about whether your current plan continues to meet your needs at renewals
  • Helping you find a different plan if your circumstances change and you are eligible for a special enrollment period
  • Resolving any claims processing errors you face
  • Filing appeals for you if you receive a denial for care that your plan should cover

When you meet with an agent you should never feel pressured or obligated to buy anything. You should feel comfortable with their personality and communication style since this is someone you hope to build a long term relationship with.

Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all your options.
