How to Find a South Dakota Medicare Agent: Six Questions to Ask
Medicare makes healthcare affordable for many seniors in South Dakota. The great thing about it is there are multiple plans to choose from, meaning you should be able to find something that suits your needs. The downside is there are often so many plans on offer that it’s difficult to know which is the right one for you.
A Medicare agent can help. Your agent will use his or her expert knowledge of Medicare to ensure you have a plan that provides you with the coverage you need. However, this means you first need to choose the right agent. Asking a some basic questions will help.
1. What areas of South Dakota do you serve?
Medicare agents can only sell in South Dakota if they’re licensed in the state. Furthermore, you should find an agent who operates in your local area. This will mean the agent has plenty of plans available covering where you live.
2. Which carriers do you represent?
Since Medicare agents each sell plans from just a select number of carriers, it’s important to find out which insurers a particular agent represents. You may like to know that the agent sells plans from your preferred carrier or just from a sufficient number.
3. Do you specialize in a particular type of Medicare plan?
If you know what kind of Medicare plan you want, consider choosing an agent that specializes in that type. However, if you want the agent’s help with making that decision as well, it’s better to pick an agent who sells everything: Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Part D and Medicare Supplement plans.
4. How do you support clients beyond selling plans?
You may need support with Medicare after you’ve purchased a plan. Top agents stay in touch with their clients throughout the year to provide additional services, such as:
- Checking if your situation has changed (such as if you have a new health condition or you move to a different area), as this may mean you qualify for a special enrollment to change plans
- Helping to resolve claims processing errors
- Filing an appeal on your behalf if you’re denied a service that you believe you are eligible for
5. What is your experience as a Medicare agent?
The most capable agents will have been selling Medicare plans for some time. These agents will know the ins and outs of Medicare, including what makes the best plans, which carriers are worth representing and key Medicare regulations. Choose an agent who has been specifically working in Medicare (not just in insurance).
6. Why would your clients recommend you?
Give agents the chance to tell you what makes them stand out. Ask them why their clients choose to stay with them each year. They may talk about the extra lengths they take to ensure their clients receive a great service year round, their in-depth knowledge of plans, and their availability to clients to help with any issue. Outstanding agents will likely be able to show you testimonials or provide you with references from clients.
When you meet with an agent you should never feel pressured or obligated to buy anything. You should feel comfortable with their personality and communication style since this is someone you hope to build a long term relationship with.
Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs.
